DreamCatchers

The DreamCatchers, an auxiliary of the Assistance League of Huntington Beach, delivered 50 gift bags to Huntington Beach Senior Services for social workers to deliver to their clients during the holidays.  Each large gift bag includes a variety of snacks, food & tea, notepads, pen & pencil, note cards & stamps, and toiletries.  The DreamCatchers Auxiliary originated in 1993 with a group of working women who had an interest in helping meet the needs of the local community, but they had limited time to donate.  Through their fundraising efforts, the DreamCatchers fund many philanthropic projects that assist both children and adults.  Since 2001, the DreamCatchers have focused one of their outreach programs on the senior citizens of Huntington Beach.  Through the Seniors’ Outreach Center, they provide gift certificates to local stores.  These gift certificates are given by city social workers to very low income seniors to purchase groceries, personal items, and medications.  The gift bags are brightly festive and will give joy to senior clients this season.

Senior Santa and Friends

As the holiday season approaches, there are hundreds of older and disabled adults in Orange County who will, for various reasons, be forgotten during this special time of year.  With your help, the Senior Santa & Friends Program provides holiday gifts and essentials to elderly & disabled clients of the Orange County Social Services and Health Care Agencies.  Huntington Beach Senior Services is again helping collect these gifts.  There are pink tags with gift ideas & collection boxes located at City Hall on the 5th floor, at Huntington Beach Central Library, and at the Seniors' Outreach Center.  Due to staffing limitations, only donations of new, unwrapped items are accepted.  Some gift ideas are: new clothing; blankets and throws; heaters and fans; microwaves; cordless telephones; white cotton socks and slippers; sheet sets and pillows (twin or full); hand and bath towels; Ensure and Boost nutritional supplement; and gift certificates for discount, drug, or grocery stores.  Monetary donations (checks payable to Senior Santa & Friends) and gift certificates can be hand delivered to HB Seniors' Outreach Center, 1718 Orange Avenue, or mailed to Senior Santa & Friends, PO Box 22006, Santa Ana, CA 92702-2006.  Questions can be directed to Michelle Yerke, HB Senior Services, 374-1521.  Thank you for your continued generosity.

ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT

Citizen Participation Advisory Board (CPAB)

Elected to serve as CPAB officers for the 2007/08 term are Richard Lara, Chairman; Rick Campbell, Vice-Chairman; and Angie Dahman, Secretary.  The CPAB will hold its first public hearing on community needs this Thursday, December 6, at the Oakview Branch Library, 17251 Oak Lane, at 7 p.m.  The CPAB will hold its second public hearing in February.  The CPAB is the 15-member board that provides recommendations to the City Council on the Community Development Block Grant funds provided by the Department of Housing and Urban Development.  Applications for 2008/09 funding are available at http://www.huntingtonbeachca.gov/CityDepartments/ed/CDBG/.  The deadline to receive a CDBG application is January 18, 2008.

PLANNING

Code Enforcement Workshop on Shopping Cart Ordinance

The Code Enforcement Division of the Planning Department held a workshop on the Shopping Cart Containment and Retrieval Ordinance last Thursday, November 29.  Five local business owners, as well as additional interested parties, attended the workshop.  The workshop was organized to provide businesses with an overview of the ordinance and guidance on how to develop and complete a cart containment and retrieval plan.  The workshop also provided businesses the opportunity to discuss questions directly with staff and to network with other Huntington Beach businesses to collaborate on containment and retrieval strategies.  For more information on the shopping cart ordinance, please contact Neighborhood Preservation Manager, Bill Zylla, at 536-5274.

November Planning Department Newsletter Available

The November Planning Department Newsletter is now available on the Planning Department website at http://www.huntingtonbeachca.gov/government/departments/planning/news_publications/index.cfm.  The monthly newsletter is intended to provide timely updates of major development projects and other Planning-related issues in the city of Huntington Beach.

PUBLIC WORKS

New Arterial Rehabilitation Project Begins

Work on Goldenwest Street and Bolsa Chica Avenue is complete, and the new arterial rehabilitation project has begun.  The new construction will cover segments of Adams Avenue between Newland and Magnolia, and Newland Street between Yorktown and Atlanta.  The first phase of the project will be removal of trees.  Pavement grinding and replacement will occur early in January, weather permitting.  A third segment, McFadden Avenue between Graham and Edwards, will be delayed until the Orange County Sanitation District work is complete.  The street segments are selected according to condition ratings established in the adopted Pavement Management Plan.  The project utilizes rubberized asphalt concrete (RAC), which contains crumb rubber derived from scrap tires.  A 2-inch layer of RAC uses over 2,000 waste tires per lane mile.  This project alone will divert over 25,000 waste tires, which otherwise would end up in a landfill.  To date, the use of RAC in the rehabilitation of the city’s arterial streets has resulted in the diversion of nearly 140,000 waste tires.  The $4.5 million project is funded by local Gas Tax.
