Huntington BeachSenior Services Care Management
During the first quarter of 2008, the Huntington Beach Senior Services Care Management Team made 343 home visits, provided 2,263 seniors with information and referrals, and made 610 daily care calls. In addition, they supported three, friendly-visitor volunteers visiting elders weekly. The Care Management Team also collaborates with city and county agencies to provide much-needed services and support for older adults. They coordinated with the Orange County Adult Protective Services on ten cases, Orange County Older Adult Services on eight cases, and Huntington Beach Code Enforcement on one case. Care Management partners with the Huntington Beach Rotary Club to provide nutritional supplement to low-income and nutritionally compromised seniors. Through a partnership with the Huntington Beach Assistance League’s Dream Catchers, they provided 56 nutritionally compromised, low-income seniors with grocery gift certificates. Additionally, Care Management works together with community programs to provide home maintenance for low-income frail elders. This quarter, the Kiwanis Project Cherish program, an intergenerational program, eased the strain of home upkeep for 29 elders. The Huntington Beach Rotary’s Rotary Refresh Program made multiple repairs to the home of one low-income elderly woman and her disabled daughter in order for their home to pass the annual housing assistance inspection, and Hope Chapel volunteers provided home maintenance assistance to four elders.

Public Works Celebrates Earth Day with New Recycling Program
Celebrated worldwide on April 22, Earth Day is the annual day of environmental awareness. Public Works has chosen Earth Day to debut a new program for civic center employees to recycle aluminum, glass, and plastic beverage containers at work. Recycling beverage containers benefits the environment by conserving energy, raw material, and landfill space. The new program is funded by a grant from the State of California Department of Conservation. According to the Department of Conservation, the energy savings from recycling a single aluminum can is equivalent to the energy used to run a television for about three hours. Special recycling containers will be conveniently located throughout city hall and police department facilities. The Orange County Conservation Corps will provide the weekly service to empty the containers and recycle the collected materials. The Orange County Conservation Corps is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to provide an opportunity for youth and young adults to learn work skills, develop a work ethic, develop a sense of community responsibility, further their formal education, develop leadership skills, and achieve the self-esteem necessary to enter the workforce. The Corps has been active in Huntington Beach for several years; assisting in the restoration of Shipley Nature Center and the Bolsa Chica Wetlands, cleaning up Bartlett Park, and recycling beverage containers at the Sports Complex.
A home solar panel system consists of several solar panels, an inverter, a battery, a charge regulator, wiring, and support materials. Sunlight is absorbed by the solar panels and is converted to electricity by the installed system. The battery stores electricity that can be used at a later time, like cloudy days or during the evening. Learn more about solar.
