Street Sweeping

street sweeper

The Street Sweeping program was established in response to Federal and State Clean Water regulations to remove debris from the streets and gutters before it can enter the storm drain system. These regulations were created to provide pollution control and to reduce the flow of urban runoff entering our waterways and ocean.

Parking control provides motivation for residents to move their vehicles, which allows for more efficient sweeping and more thorough debris removal. On a weekly basis, the city's street sweepers collect nearly 70 tons of rubbish from the streets and gutters.

For more information about the Street Sweeping program or your neighborhood's street sweeping schedule, contact Maintenance Operations at 960-8861.

If you received a parking citation due to street sweeping and would like more information, please call (800) 553-4412.

Street Sweeping Cancellations - Labor Day Week Modifications

There will be no street sweeping on Monday, September 4 (First Monday route). Streets that are not swept due to holidays are not rescheduled. Due to the trash collection holiday, trash carts are at the curb one day later than usual, which conflicts with scheduled sweeping days in many neighborhoods. Residents should place trash carts at the curb per the holiday schedule. Most neighborhoods with trash carts at the curb on sweep day will not be swept and parking control will not be enforced.

The following areas may have street sweeping, but no parking citations will be issued:

• Areas with an alternate side sweep schedule
• Areas with trash collection in rear alley

If you have questions about the holiday maintenance schedule, please contact the Public Works Maintenance division at 714-960-8861.

If your regular street sweeping day falls on one of the following holidays, your street will not be swept that day. Streets that are not swept due to holidays are not rescheduled, but are skipped until the next regular sweep day. There is no make-up schedule for street sweeping. Streets will be swept according to schedule on any holidays that are not designated "No Sweep." By City Council approval on January 16, 2001, no street sweeping parking citations are issued for the week between Christmas and New Year's.
