Monthly Online Newsletter - October 2006

This month at the HB Art Center
It started out as another Fiber Show . . . .

But you have to look closely, because what started out as fiber has morphed into all sorts of MANufactured materials such as plastic, fabric, yarn, zip ties, paint, thread, ribbon, monofilament, painted string and twine, ribbons, and ink.

MANufactured opens on Friday, October 13th and will feature artwork by four artists: Cathy Breslaw, Amy Caterina, Maureen Shields, and Tomoko Suzuki. The exhibition explores models of painting and sculpture through the use of the aforementioned materials. These collective works transcend the idea of globalization and shrinking, obstacles and one's struggle to overcome them, fragments documenting one's life journey, land use and property value. As part of the opening day excitement and continuing throughout the duration of the exhibition, our project room will include opportunities for the public to create new grass patches. The artist Amy Caterina, will include the public's contributions into the exhibition or compose a new piece.

Enjoy an elegant day at the Hilton Waterfront Beach Resort, while supporting the Art Center at this year's Brunch for the Arts hosted by the Huntington Beach Art Center Foundation on Sunday, October 15, 2006. The event will highlight both live and silent auctions, which will include fine art, fine wine and fine jewelry. Please call the Art Center for details at: 714.374.1650.

The history of beer and the process of brewing each distinctive beer will be presented in a spirit of competition by BrewBakers, BJ's Restaurant and Brewery, Oggi's Pizza and Brewing Company and Huntington Beach Beer Company. It's time for Fire Prevention Week, and from October 8-14, The Huntington Beach Fire Department is joining forces with the nonprofit National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) to remind residents to 'Prevent Cooking Fires: Watch What You Heat.'

During this year's fire safety campaign, firefighters and safety advocates will be spreading the word about the dangers of cooking fires--most of which result from unattended cooking-and teaching local residents how to prevent cooking fires from starting in the first place.

According to the latest NFPA research, cooking is the leading cause of home fires. One out of three home fires begins in the kitchen-more than any other place in the home. Cooking fires are also the leading cause of home fire-related injuries.

"Often when we're called to a fire that started in the kitchen, the residents tell us that they only left the kitchen for a few minutes," says Fire Chief Duane Olson. "Sadly, that's all it takes for a dangerous fire to start. We hope that Fire Prevention Week will help us reach folks in the community before they suffer a damaging lesson."

Beware of cooking fires

  • Stay in the kitchen when you are frying, grilling, broiling, or boiling food.
  • If you must leave the room, even for a short period of time, turn off the stove.
  • When you are simmering, baking, or roasting food, check it regularly, and use a timer to remind you.
  • If you have young children, use the stove's back burners whenever possible.
  • When you cook, wear clothing with tight-fitting sleeves.
  • Keep potholders, oven mitts, wooden utensils, paper and plastic bags, towels, and anything else that can burn, away from your stovetop.

Volunteers needed to deliver holiday meals

Delivering Holiday Meals to Huntington Beach seniors is a great way to introduce community service to children. On Thanksgiving morning and Christmas morning Huntington Beach Senior Services needs volunteers to deliver a festive meal to clients. volunteer picture

Social Workers consider all of their 250 clients to ensure those without friends or family on the holiday will still have holiday cheer to anticipate. Norm's Restaurant prepares the holiday meals at cost. Volunteers pick up the meals from Norms between 11:00 a.m. and noon then deliver them to the seniors on their list in usually about 2-hours.

In addition to the meals, the National Charity League handcrafts gifts for each senior for the volunteers to deliver. The seniors look forward to the short visit from the friendly volunteers and their families as much as the delicious meal and gift.

To support the Holiday Meals program, visit the Handycrafter's display case in the lobby of Rodgers Seniors' Center to purchase scarves, sweaters, afghans and much more.
