Art Center presents local artists' work

The Huntington Beach Art Center is presenting its annual exhibition "Centered on the Center." A group exhibition, "Centered on the Center" features works from local, regional, and national artists from January 21 through February 26. Gallery admission is free and open to the public.

The open call for artists went out, and eager artists lined up out the door and around the corner of the Art Center to submit their artwork. Artwork was submitted on a first-come, first-serve basis, and is displayed in a salon style exhibition.

This annual exhibition features approximately 300 works in a variety of media, including painting, drawing, photography, mixed media, sculpture, and installation. The exhibition features internationally known artists and be a great opportunity to see emerging artists as well.

The Art Center is open Wednesday through Saturday from 12 to 6 p.m., and Sunday from 12 to 4 p.m. It is closed on Monday and Tuesday. Wireless Internet available at City Council Chambers

The City of Huntington Beach is introducing free wireless Internet access for the City Council chambers and adjacent meeting rooms. The City Council chambers has been a Wi-Fi hotspot since the December 5th meeting.

Starting at this meeting, observers have been able to use their laptop with wireless access capability to access the World Wide Web.

With this service, you are able to access the Internet, check your email, or pull up the agenda for the City Council meeting electronically through the City's website during the meeting. To use this free service, a laptop with a wireless card and wireless software installed will be required. An information sheet is available outside Council chambers to help users.

Road Closures will occur during the Pacific Shoreline Marathon

Every year, on Super Bowl Sunday, thousands of runners from all 50 states and several foreign countries come to Huntington Beach to participate in one of four oceanfront Pacific Shoreline events; the marathon, half marathon, 5K, and kids' races. This year, Sunday, February 5th marks the 10th Anniversary for the Pacific Shoreline Marathon and more than 10,000 runners are making plans to attend.

pacific shorline marathonThe Marathon and Half Marathon both begin at 7 a.m., the Half Marathon Wheelchair Division begins at 6:50 a.m., the 5K begins at 8:30 a.m. and the Kids Run begins at 10 a.m. The oceanfront course is a flat course that elevates from sea level to 100 feet throughout the race. All of the races run along PCH, so please be advised that PCH will be closed from the Hyatt to Warner for much of the day.

While the Marathon is sold out already, there are still openings in the other divisions. The cost for the Half Marathon is $55 through February 1st, and $35 at the Expo; and the cost for the 5K is $30 through February 1st, and $35 at the Expo. More than 1,000 volunteers are needed to make this event a success. Volunteers are needed for water stations, clean up, registration, and information. If you are interested in volunteering, please email volunteer@psmarathon.com.

City Council Meetings now being Webcast live

city council webcast The City of Huntington Beach City Council meetings are now webcast live through the City of Huntington Beach's website. This exciting new feature will only allows viewers to watch the live City Council meetings and other Channel 3 broadcasting on their computers, but also makes it possible to view archived meetings.

The City Clerk's Office made the initial contact with the company, Granicus, which specializes in the live-streaming of media content for local governments. With support from the Public Information Office and Information Services, the City Clerk's Office funded this project from their budget so that the City would be able to offer this service to the public.

Now, for the first time, residents who do not subscribe to cable will be able to watch City Council meetings live from their homes via the City's website. The public will also be able to view the meetings live on the Internet if they are traveling or away from home.

If you miss the live webcast, you will be able to view the archived meeting after it is uploaded the next day. Please keep in mind that it will take some time to upload the meeting to be archived. Shorter meetings may be available the morning after the meeting, while longer meetings may not be available until the afternoon or evening.

Granicus allows viewers of archived meetings to "jump to" a specific agendized item of interest. This feature allows viewers to choose the archived meeting they wish to view, choose the agenda item or section of the meeting that they wish to view from a drop-down menu that is below the screen, and then watch the meeting starting from that point. Users will also be able to view the Council Agenda, and through a hyperlink, will be able to connect to the archived video at that point of the meeting.

The first meeting to be webcast live was the City Council meeting on January 17. The archived meetings (beginning December 19, 2005) are also available on the City's website.

City supports Marine Battalion

In April 2005, the City of Huntington Beach adopted the 3rd Battalion/1st Marines - or, "Thundering Third" - stationed at Camp Pendleton. Previous to our adoption, this battalion had staged the successful battle for Fallujah and had sustained the largest number of casualties and wounded in action of any battalion in Iraq.

support marine batalion The "City of Huntington 3/1 Committee" was formed immediately with councilpersons Dave Sullivan, Gil Coerper and Cathy Green volunteering to serve and representatives from the Police and Fire Departments and Municipal Employees Association (MEA), along with members from the community, making up the remainder of the 15 member group.

The committee hit the ground running by helping to stage the "Dining Out," event held at the Hyatt Grand Coast in May. This formal ball welcomes the troops returning home and was a spectacular event thanks to the many sponsors and donors, as well as the staff and management of the beautiful Hyatt.

In July, the committee held a picnic at Central Park for over 200 Marines and their families - including those from the 3/1 who marched in our parade. The Public Works department provided all the tables and chairs as well as the barbecue to grill steaks, hot dogs and chicken. Public Works employees also showed up early to set up all the tables and came back - on their own time - to retrieve everything. It was an enormous show of support and just another example of our employees going that extra mile to make good things happen!

Members of the 3/1 were deployed back to Iraq on Labor Day. Mayor Dave Sullivan and Mayor Pro Tem Gil Coerper were on hand to see the guys off and spend a very emotional day with their families.

The 3/1 Committee then kicked into high gear preparing for the upcoming holidays as well as continuing the mission to provide aid to the families of our Marines in times of need.

To date, the 3/1 Committee has supplied 2 sets of washers and dryers to mothers who could not afford to replace their broken machines. We have purchased gas cards for a Marine whose 4 year old daughter was diagnosed with leukemia and needed frequent trips to San Diego for chemotherapy and other treatment. We have purchased a new set of tires for a family, and donated to a successful Halloween party for the children of our Marines.

In November, items were collected with the help of First Christian Church of Huntington Beach, and nearly 300 care packages were sent to Iraq. Donations from the HB Rotary Club, Surf City Kiwanis and various individuals helped cover the entire cost of mailing these items, which included 1100 pocket flags folded and packaged by the ladies of the American Legion Post.

Holiday cards were collected and sent in December and the 3/1 Committee assisted support marine batalionwith the annual holiday party at Camp Pendleton by providing the entire meal, caroling books, decorations and 150 gifts for the wives. Even Santa wore a suit borrowed from the city!

Perhaps the highlight of the event was the appearance of five Marines, dressed in elf costumes, singing and dancing their way through an hilarious comedy routine. The costumes and act were also provided by a member of the 3/1 Committee.

The MEA came through in December with even more care packages. Members brought items to their annual holiday luncheon and, with characteristic generosity, managed to amass about 150 boxes of items. They then went to their own pockets to pay for the mailing of these packages and even delivered them to Camp Pendleton.

The 3/1 Committee will stage one last care package drive before the last mailing date in February, and will continue to respond to requests for aid.

On May 22, the committee will host a golf tournament at Camp Pendleton and will be soliciting sponsors and golfers soon. The troops of the 3/1 will be home by then and sponsors will have the opportunity to include one or more of our returning heroes on their foursomes. The spectacular Dining Out event is scheduled for June 3rd at the Hyatt and will be a highly coveted - and limited - invitation.

In July, we will once again host a picnic and we have been put on notice that the word of mouth from last year's event was so great that we should expect a very large percentage of the Thundering Third and their families this year.

HB Police Department will be holding it's 25th Citizen Academy starting February 28th

The Huntington Beach Police Department is proud to offer the Citizen Academy to local residents. Designed to increase the understanding of the police department, the academy is conducted over a 13-week period.

Students will learn from department personnel who are experts in the areas of patrol and traffic operations, criminal law, narcotics, SWAT, K-9, AERO operations and other fields. All students will participate in one ride-a-long during the academy.

The Huntington Beach Police Department is seeking citizens throughout the community to participate in our Citizen Police Academy. Whether you live in the city or work in the city of Huntington Beach, your attendance is welcome.

The only additional requirements are that you must be at least 18 years of age, and pass a background check.

All interested persons must complete an application. An eligibility list is then compiled and students are assigned to the next available session. The deadline for the next class will be February 21st, 2006.

Updated Passport Requirements for Travel to Mexico or Canada

pasport icon The City of Huntington Beach, through the City Clerk's Office, has been designated as a United States Passport Acceptance Facility. The Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative will require all U.S. citizens, citizens of the British Overseas Territory of Bermuda, and citizens of Canada and Mexico to have a passport or other accepted secure document that establishes the bearer's identity and nationality to enter or re-enter the United States by January 1, 2008.

The Initiative will be rolled out in phases. The proposed timeline will be as follows: December 31, 2006 - Requirement applied to all air and sea travel to or from Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean, and Bermuda. December 31, 2007- Requirement extended to all land border crossings as well as air and sea travel.

United States citizens can visit the State Department's travel website, www.Travel.state.gov, or call the National Passport Information Center at 1-877-487-2778 for the most current information. Pipeline dislodges from dredging equipment

In late December 2005, a powerful storm near Hawaii generated nearly 20-foot waves along the shores of Huntington Beach. The heavy surf caused a section of a large dredging pipe from the Bolsa Chica Wetland restoration project to break away and drift towards the Huntington Beach Pier. The section of pipe came from Ross Island Sand and Gravel Company, the company conducting the dredging for the Bolsa Chica project. Their dredging pipeline broke free from its anchor on the morning of Wednesday, December 21, 2005, and a large piece began drifting down the coast.

pipline on beach The large section of the dredging pipe drifted into the Pier below Tower Zero either Wednesday night or early Thursday morning, and crashed against the pilings in the heavy surf.

Recovery operations began early Friday morning. Ross Island hired Warren Diving to assist with the salvage. The divers worked with a team made up of members from Huntington Beach Public Works, Marine Safety and Beach Maintenance, who all contributed to the recovery efforts.

A towline was successfully attached to the floating section of the pipeline, approximately 150 feet of pipeline was pulled out of the water with a tractor. The pipeline was pulled to Goldenwest Street where it was staged on the beach for subsequent transportation to the dredging location at Bolsa Chica, which would have to take place during low tide.

A total of 310 feet of pipeline has been recovered since the storm, however there is still approximately 1000 feet of pipeline yet to be retrieved. One large exposed section, about 150 feet, has settled parallel to the North side of the Pier, with one side buried into the sand. Another 40-foot section on the South side of the Pier, runs parallel to the beach, and is thought to run through the Pier. Attempting to bring in the rest of the pipeline has proved to be a formidable task for the dredging contractors. Attempts to bring in the large section of pipeline on the North Side of the Pier resulted in the separation of two one-inch steel cables. Due to tide and surf conditions the piece has yet to be retrieved.

Marine Safety Officials are on a 24-hour pipeline watch, keeping track of any changes in the situation and warning surfers of any danger. There does not seem to be any damage to the Pier, but they are keeping a close eye on the situation.

City Treasurer introduces AutoPay program

The City of Huntington Beach is now making payment of your municipal services much easier with the AutoPay Program. This free service is available to all Huntington Beach residents and will automatically pay your utility bill on time each month. AutoPay automatically withdraws funds from any personal, business, or checking account to pay your bill for the city's utility services.

Anyone who wishes to sign up for AutoPay can print out an application at www.surfcity-hb.org/announcements/auto_pay.cfm. After completing and signing the application, attach a "voided" check from your financial institution and send it back to the City of Huntington Beach to the address on the application. Please ensure that your utility account is current, with no credit balance or delinquent amount owing when you apply.

After you have sent in your application, it may take between 30 to 45 days to process the application and to confirm your bank account. Continue to pay your statement normally until you see a message on page one of your statements that states that you are on the City's AutoPay program. You will not need to send a payment for that statement. After you see this message, the payments for current charges will automatically be taken from your account between 10 and 17 calendar days after the statement's date.

Sandbags available to residents

The rainy season is upon us again, and citizens of Huntington Beach will be able to get free sandbags during storms and when significant rainfall is in our forecast. Local citizens can receive up to 20 sandbags from the City of Huntington Beach Corporate Yard at 17371 Gothard St. The hours are Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. These hours may be extended in the event of a major storm.

Residents should be prepared to show a form of personal identification, like a driver's license or photo I.D card, and a current utility bill or similar proof of HB residency. Citizens are asked to bring their own shovel and fill their own bags, unless they are physically unable. The elderly and disabled may call the HB Fire Dept. CERT message line, (714) 536-5974, to have sandbags delivered by volunteers.

Save-A-Life Saturday CERT Classes

fire icon For more than 14 years, the Community Emergency Response Team Program has provided information and training on disaster preparedness. Huntington Beach CERT was formed by the Fire Department following a tornado in 1991. In case of an emergency in Huntington Beach, CERT will assist by providing leadership and coordination during an emergency, and assistance to help victims recover from an emergency.

As part of this program, the Fire Department offers monthly CERT classes to help citizens become involved in preparing for disaster. The first class will be held in February and the topic is Disaster and Terrorism Preparedness. This class will present an overview of the various threats to Huntington Beach- fire, flood, earthquake, riot, tsunami, terrorism, etc. - and the City's plan for response.

HB Fire Captain Gary Finney will speak about his experience during Hurricane Katrina and the valuable lessons he learned. You will also learn how to keep your family safe in a terrorism incident. The class will be held on Saturday, February 18 in the City Council Chambers at 2000 Main Street from 7:45 am to noon. Use portable heating devices and fireplaces with caution this winter

Rising energy costs may push consumers to a more frequent use of portable heating devices and fireplaces this winter. The concern is that space heaters pose a higher risk of fire and death than central heating. The leading cause of space heater fires was combustibles (furniture, draperies, bedding) too close to the heaters. Fireplaces and chimneys were also a major cause of heating fires and fire deaths.
Helpful hints when using portable space heaters:

  • When buying heaters, make sure a recognized testing laboratory has tested or listed the device and choose devices with automatic shutoff features.
  • Portable space heaters should be turned off every time you leave a room or go to bed.
  • Keep space heaters at least three feet away from anything that can burn.
  • Never use liquefied-petroleum (LPG) gas heaters with self-contained fuel supplies in the home.
    Fireplace helpful hints:
  • Keep fireplace flue free from excessive creosote build-up.
  • Allow ashes to cool before disposing. Dispose of ashes in a metal container with a tight-fitting lid.
  • Use a screen to protect from flying burning embers.
  • Never leave a fire in a fireplace unattended.

    HB Family gets new home from Habitat for Humanity

    Habitat for Humanity volunteers raised the walls for a new home in Huntington Beach on Saturday, January 23. The beginning of construction on the home, located at 2502 habitat for humanity family Delaware Street (near Yorktown), marks the third "Women Build" home in Orange County. This is the first "Women Build" home in Huntington Beach.

    Early Saturday morning, volunteers, families, and representatives of major donors to the Huntington Beach development came to the blessing of the site. Mayor Pro Tem Gil Coerper attended the site blessing and earned a "Women Build" pink hard hat when he promised to come back and assist with the construction.

    "Women Build" provides an environment in which women can feel comfortable learning skills they might not otherwise have the opportunity to learn. Women make up 50% of Habitat's volunteer work force; yet, often because of lack of training, they account for less than 15% of the work on the construction site.

    The two-bedroom house being built on Delaware Street is for the Alvarado family, a Habitat program family. Habitat uses non-government donations of funding, materials, professional services, and volunteer labor to build simple, decent homes which are sold to qualified very low-income families for a 1% down payment and a no-interest mortgage. Mortgage payments are recycled to build more Habitat homes. habitat for humanity house build

    The Alvarado family will have "sweat equity," meaning they have to contribute 500 hours of labor to the program by building their own home, helping another Habitat family build their home, or working in the Habitat ReStore.

    City Historian looking for photos

    The City of Huntington Beach is looking for residents who want to play a role in recording HB's history. The City's Historian is seeking photos to keep her photo files up to date, and this is a great opportunity for anyone who wants to contribute to preserving Huntington Beach's historical records.

    The City Historian is requesting past and current photos of many Surf City events and places for these photo archives, with a few specific items on her wish list:

    • Aerial shots of the City from 1990 on (the last aerial is dated 1991)
    • The 100th anniversary Fourth of July Parade (2004)
    • City redevelopment projects, including:dogs in costumes
      • Recently finished beach construction
      • PHC/ Bolsa Chica bridge construction area,
      • Sports Park
      • Bella Terra
      • The Hyatt and its bridge over PCH
      • The Hilton

    There are always ongoing photo needs for a variety of HB subjects, including:

    • Future Fourth of July Parades
    • The 100th Anniversary events of HB High School
    • City Schools
    • Public events (for example surfing activities, memorials, park dedications, Pier activities, etc.)
    • 2005 Christmas downtown
    • City malls, parks, golf courses
    • Major restaurants

    The City Historian has also requested for her non-photo files any old and current City maps.

    Each photo should be identified with a caption citing the site, year taken, people identified, any unusual features, and pertinent information useful in the City's database such as photograph's name/address. It is preferred that you give the City Historian a hard copy of the photo, however, disks will be accepted. Any photo submitted will become public property.

    Residents take advantage of E-Waste recycling event

    An E-Waste Recycling event held in January, sponsored by the City of Huntington Beach and SoCal Recyclers Inc., brought in 112,000 pounds of E-waste. This event offered local residents and businesses an opportunity to safely dispose of unwanted computers and electronics, also known as E-Waste.

    e waste It was a busy two days at the Huntington Beach Sports Complex, where this event took place. More than a dozen people were on hand to unload the vehicles, take inventory, and to move them quickly through the lines. A total of 914 vehicles brought in their E-waste, with computers (23%) and monitors (36%) making up the majority of the electronics brought in for recycling. Other items collected include televisions (15%), printers (11%) and stereos and VCR's (5%).

    E-Waste contains heavy metals such as lead, mercury, chromium, cadmium, and zinc that when disposed of improperly, may contaminate our soil and ground water. E-Waste is responsible for 70 percent of all heavy metals found in landfills today. For the security and piece of mind of its customers, SoCal Computer Recyclers guarantees privacy by declassifying hard drives, removing asset tags and even indemnifying clients from any liability associated with the recovery of their electronics.

    SoCal Recyclers initially estimated 100 pounds per resident of E-waste to be brought in, although fortunately that expectation was too low. The average weight per car was 125 pounds, which was 25 percent higher than the original estimate.

    E-Waste is reused in many ways. SoCal Recycling guarantees that a minimum of 10 percent of all usable material is refurbished and donated to local schools, libraries and other community services. As part of its ongoing commitment to promote computer literacy, SoCal Computer Recyclers donates computers to under-funded public schools and teen centers in Los Angeles and Orange County.

    Armando Brizuela given Mayor's Award for January

    On December 13, 1971, Armando Brizuela came to the City of Huntington Beach from the City of Santa Ana, where he had worked in water engineering. In his 34 years with the City, he was promoted four times and has worked in all aspects of Public Works Engineering.

    Armando is a dedicated, hard worker who can be depended upon to get the job done. He is known to work late and to come in to work on his days off to make sure that the customers, whether it is a large commercial or industrial development or the "mom and pop - building their dream home", are able to obtain their necessary permits and are approved to begin their construction as soon as possible.

    Location for Paintball Tournament has been changed

    The National Paintball League's competition is once again coming to Huntington Beach. This year, however, the action will be moving from the beach near the Pier down to the parking lot and beach area in front of the Hilton and Pacific City. The NPPL Super 7 World Series will be taking place March 23-26 from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. (6 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Saturday the 24th). At this three-day paintball competition, trade show and festival, teams from around the world compete for trophies, prizes and series points toward an overall championship.

    Paintball is currently the third most popular extreme sport in the world, with 12 million followers. The floor for the competition will be made of Astroturf, and high netting will surround the playing area so that no paintballs will escape. The participants play a more challenging version of a combination of "tag" and "hide and seek." A number of celebrity guests are expected to participate in Sunday's activities.

    During the Paintball Tournament, the Beach Parking lot on PCH across from Pacific City and the Hilton will be closed, so there will be no overnight RV Parking from March 20 to 28th.
